In keeping with the current regional and global demand, the Department of English in Hardy Advanced Technological Institute, commenced in 2007 with only 7 students and has since been home to students, teachers and employees in the region as the regional center for the study, teaching and research in English language, literature and communication skills.

In collaboration with SLIATE, under the guidance of its Director General Dr. Hilary E Silva, the department currently facilitates a student population of 300 studying in both full time and part time programs of Higher National Diploma in English (HNDE). Upon the completion of the two year theoretical program of study, students are placed in schools to undergo an implant teacher training for a period of six months after which they are recruited as teachers of English mostly in the Eastern province.

The department also consists of motivated and dedicated qualified academics equipped with teaching- learning aids. There is often visiting staff with many different areas of expertise and approaches to support the program in terms of teaching and researching almost every aspect of prescribed subjects.

The Higher National Diploma in English course provides an opportunity for School leavers with GCE A’ Level qualifications to improve their expertise in English Language, English Literature and Communication skills.

The learners will be focused specialize during the second year in order to strengthen their chances of finding suitable employment. The course also intends to develop their personality, interpersonal skills and general convertible skills such as adaptability, decision making ability and organizational ability which are regarded as important requirements to meet employment prospects. The new programme of study is designed according to the course unit system enabling the assessment of students in credits. After completion of NDE level, the students are offered the three specialization areas namely English Language Teaching, Journalism and English for Business Communication. There will be no in-plant training in the area of specialization but a practical component is included for each in the second semester of the final year. Apart from the core programme there are two support courses offered for the students throughout the first year named Study Skills and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to enhance the independent learning ability of the students.

Higher National Diploma in English is being conducted as full time and part time with the duration of 2 ½ years and 2 years respectively.

The full time course has 2 year course work and 06 months implant training in specialized fields where as the part time course has 2 years course work only.

Mode of conduct of programs

  • Full Time Course: Monday- Friday ( 8.30 am- 4.00 pm)

  • Part Time Course: Saturday and Sunday ( 8.00 am- 4.30 pm)

Assessment Method

The assessment method includes two semester end examinations per year and continuous assessment methods.

Course Fees

No course fees are levied for full time course. Course fees for the part time students will be Six thousand Rupees ( Rs 6000 /-) per semester.

Selection Method

Short listed applicants will have to sit for a written test and face an interview for the selection. The selections of the students will be based on the merit performance in both written examination and interview.

The number of students to be recruited will be decided by the relevant institutes according to the availability of resources.

The decision of the Director General SLIATE will be the final decision on the admission of the students.

Date, Time and Venue of the interview and written examination and the necessary documents to be submitted in the interview will be notified in writing after receiving all the application.

  3. English specialist Teacher Training certificate; or the Diploma offered by the College of Education.

  4. Successful completion of GCE ( A/ L) Examination (New syllabus ) in three subjects and a pass at the National Certificate in English for Commerce, industry and further Education conducted by the Department of Technical Education & Training or equivalent qualifications
